
SANTA ROSA NATIONAL PARK
Santa Rosa National Park is located in the province of Guanacaste, North Pacific, only 36 Km north of the city of Liberia. It was created by Executive Order No. 1562-A, of March 20, 1972. It has an area of 37.117 land hectares and 78.000 marine hectares.
It is one of the most important historical areas of the country; the house and the stone yards were the scene tof the largest national heroic epic: The Battle of Santa Rosa on March 20, 1856.
The park is important for the protection and restoration of the habitats called of the climatic region called Dry Pacific. The beaches Nancite y Naranjo are of a great scenic beauty and important for the nesting of the sea turtles as the ridley and the leatherback turtle.
In Santa Rosa are around ten habitats, including: deciduous forests, oak forests, evergreen forests, mangroves, swamps, coastal forests, scrub forests, beach vegetation and grassland or savanna.
The savanna is composed mainly of thatching grass and scattered trees such as: the oak, nance, the chumico de palo or raspaguacal, the cornizuelo and the gourd. The deciduous forest have around 240 species of trees and shrubbery: Guanacaste the national tree, the nude Indian, the savanna oak, chaperno, jobo, pochote, madroño and guácimo.
In the evergreen forest the dominant species are the medlar, the oak, the tempisque and the olive. Wildlife is abundant and diverse. Have been observed 155 species of mammals, more than half are bats, 253 birds, 100 amphibians and reptiles and more than 10.000 of insects including some 3,140 species of butterflies and moths.
Among the most stunning mamals we can find the howler monkey, the White-faced monkey, the armadillos, deer, tapir, coati, zaíno, puma, jaguar and the raccoons. The semi spiny mouse is the most abundant mammals of all. Some of the most outstanding birds are: magpies, frentianaranjada parakeet, the red widow, the soterrey matraquero, the cargahuesos, the peacock, the sparrow hawk, and the saltarín colilargo.
Park facilities and hours
The Museum is open from 8am to 4pm, and the camping area is open 24 hours. Picnic areas with tables and charcoal cook stoves, potable water, restrooms and showers.
