Pre-Colombian Gold Museum – The museum has an extraordinary collection that reflects the worldview, and metalworking techniques of the Pre-Colombian people of Costa Rica from 500 to 1,500 A.C.  It is within walking distance from the hotel, ask in Reception for directions.

Jade Museum – This museum shows one of the largest collections of jade in the world and the largest in America, including pre-Colombian artefacts and reproductions.  Since jade was a valuable material for pre-Columbian cultures of Central America and Mexico the museum displays a large collection of human and animal figures as well as of necklaces dating from 500 B.C. to 800 A.D.  It also has an exhibition of valuable jewellery of foreign and national artists.

Zoo Ave – This is a must see in Alajuela.  You will probably need to dedicate half a day to this trip but it is well worth it.  It is host to an amazing number of bird species native to Costa Rica, as well as a good variety of other animals.  Each animal enclosure has great descriptions of the different species and signs that inform of key threats to Costa Rican wildlife.  This place is a non-profit organization that uses the admissions fees for the following three goals: Environmental Education, Costa Rican Wildlife Rescue and the Care of Endangered Species.

Butterfly Farm – Few places in the world offer visitors a more in depth view and appreciation of butterflies.  At the Butterfly Farm, widely recognized as one of the most popular destinations close to San Jose, all guests receive a two-hour guided tour inside an enclosed tropical garden.  Here you will see hundreds of Costa Rican butterflies flutter around flowers as trained guides explain about the life cycle and natural history of these fascinating creatures.  Early morning tours may have the treat of watching butterflies emerging from their chrysalides.  On export days visitors may watch thousands of pupae being packed for export.  This tour may be combined with others.  Please contact our reception for more information.
